What Board Certification Means to You?

While researching their cosmetic options, many of Dr. Wang's patients have seen advertisements featuring physicians claiming that they are "board certified." Understandably, many people think all "board certified" physicians have the same credentials. Nothing could be further from the truth. The unfortunate reality is that any group of medical professionals can get together and create its own board certification. These organizations confuse patients and devalue the credentials of physicians who have earned board certification from a board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

The ABMS oversees and recognizes the established boards in 24 medical specialties. The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the designated board for the credentialing of plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body. Dr. Wang is board certified by the ABPS. To be certified by the ABPS, a physician has to have at least six years of surgical training and experience, with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery training in an accredited residency program. In addition the certification requires passing rigorous oral and written exams.

To refer to themselves as a "board certified plastic surgeon," physicians must be certified by the ABPS. Board certified plastic surgeons are guaranteed to have advanced plastic surgery training that helps them perform these types of procedures. Dr. Wang believes it is essential that you clearly identify the credentials of the physicians you are considering and place great emphasis on their level of training and experience in the field of plastic surgery in order to choose a "good" surgeon.

BOTOX® Safety: What You Need to Know

Recently, the media have reported that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed BOTOX under review to evaluate certain serious adverse reactions occurring after use in a small subset of patients. This news has caused concern among many of our patients. Here's what you need to know about this recent news:

  • BOTOX Cosmetic was approved over 5 years ago by the FDA to safely and temporarily improve the appearance of certain facial wrinkles. The FDA has not rescinded or modified its approval in any way.
  • The adverse side effects currently under FDA investigation mostly occurred in children with cerebral palsy. These children received doses of BOTOX that were 15 to 20 times stronger than the amount used for cosmetic purposes. This use of BOTOX, while considered safe by many physicians, has never received FDA approval.
  • It's more important than ever to have your procedure performed by a medical professional who has the knowledge and skills necessary to perform BOTOX Cosmetic injections carefully and who knows what to do in the extremely rare case where complications occur.

To learn more about the safety of BOTOX Cosmetic, talk with Dr. Wang. He is committed to providing thorough patient education so that you can make an informed decision about which cosmetic procedures will best meet your needs.

Breast Augmentation: Two Important Choices

Every woman interested in breast augmentation has a significant number of choices to consider: Is the procedure right for me? What do I want to achieve? How big do I want to go? This month, Dr. Wang briefly discusses a few of the important decisions you'll need to make once you decide on breast augmentation. To learn about every aspect of breast enhancement surgery from Dr. Wang, call the Wang Plastic Surgery office closest to you or request a Complimentary Cosmetic Consultation online.

Saline vs. Silicone: Dr. Wang offers women a choice of saline-filled implants or the latest generation of cohesive silicone gel implants. Each has advantages and disadvantages, and both can be used to meet the needs of a variety of breast enhancement patients. Women often are surprised by how much more silicone gel looks and feels like natural breast tissue. Silicone implants have been used for millions of breast augmentation procedures over the last decade. Selecting the material for your breast implants is a highly personal decision, one Dr. Wang can help you with when you talk with him in more detail during your consultation.

Incision Placement: Women who choose saline implants have several choices for where their implants will be inserted. Dr. Wang has the skills and experience to successfully perform saline breast implant augmentation using any incision site, including TUBA, where the unfilled implant is inserted through the belly button and then filled once placed in the breast, leaving practically no scarring. Silicone gel implants come pre-filled from the manufacturer, so they need to be inserted using an inframammary incision, which will leave a small scar underneath the breast where it joins with the chest wall. See the results that are possible with a variety of incision methods:

  • Inframammary Breast Augmentation
  • Periareolar Breast Augmentation
  • Transaxillary Breast Augmentation
  • TUBA Breast Augmentation

Dr. Wang is able to deliver great results using the implant type and incision method that makes the most sense for you. Request a Complimentary Cosmetic Consultation online or call 888-360-6688 to set up an appointment at the office near you to learn more about your breast augmentation options.
